Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in American men and women.2 The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2018 there will be 97,220 new cases of colon cancer and 43,030 new cases of rectal cancer. In addition, the organization estimates that approximately 50,630 deaths will occur from CRC during the same year. Despite these estimates, the rate of deaths caused by CRC has been declining in the past several decades. This decrease can be attributed to, among other factors, advances in screening methods and the availability of improved agents and regimens for the treatment of patients with the disease.
