Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of extremely rare bone marrow failure disorders that are often unrecognized and underdiagnosed. According to the National Cancer Institute, approximately 10,000 individuals in the United States will be diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndromes in 2018.1 How much do you know about myelodysplastic syndromes?

Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of disorders in which the blood-forming cells within the bone marrow are abnormal and cannot make new non-defective blood cells. Myelodysplastic syndromes occur mainly in individuals aged >50 years, with the highest incidence in individuals aged 70 to 80 years.2 The survival rate for patients with the disease is directly related to the number of bone marrow blast cells, but averages from approximately 9 months without treatment to 12 years with treatment.2,3 Public awareness of myelodysplastic syndromes needs to remain a priority to improve survival rates and quality of life in patients diagnosed with the disease.
