Gastric cancer is a rare cancer in the United States, but it is more common in less developed countries.1 Until the late 1930s, gastric cancer was the leading cause of death in the United States, but the incidence has decreased each year. Within the last 10 years, the incidence rate of the disease has decreased approximately 1.5% annually.1,2 The overall 5-year survival rate for patients with gastric cancer is approximately 31%.1 Public awareness of the disease needs to remain a priority to improve survival rates and patient quality of life.
