Skin cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in the United States, and most cases are preventable. Despite efforts to address risk factors (eg, inadequate protection from ultraviolet [UV] radiation), skin cancer rates, including rates of melanoma, have continued to rise. Public awareness of effective strategies for preventing skin cancer needs to be a priority to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with the disease.
