The Oncology Nurse-APN/PA (TON), we feature Stanford Cancer Clinical Trials Office. Andrea F. Plati, MSN, RN, OCN, Associate Director of Clinical Research Operations, took the time to speak with us about her role, challenges, and exciting trials she is undertaking. “Stanford currently has an ongoing clinical trial in acute myeloid leukemia,” she explained. “In this trial, a proprietary drug is achieving excellent responses in some patients, providing a glimmer of hope for subsets of patients within this difficult-to-treat cancer.”

We also feature conference highlights from the 2015 European Cancer Congress, which was recently held in Vienna, Austria. In particular, we provide news on ovarian suppression during chemotherapy, timing of sentinel node biopsy in patients with melanoma, as well as support for patients with head and neck cancer, and how visualization and relaxation techniques can reduce anxiety in patients receiving chemotherapy.

Be sure to read about this year’s ONE Award winner, Barbara Antolino-Smith, RN, BSN, CPN, Pediatric Oncology Nurse, Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital, PA, who received the award at the Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN) Sixth Annual Conference that was recently held in Atlanta, GA. “The richness in our lives in this country is not measured by things or by the parameters of success, such as careers, money, or houses,” she told TON in an interview. “Richness needs to be measured in relationships, and showing kindness and patience toward others. We must live by the ‘golden rule.’ Nurses and navigators understand that implicitly, and they are my heroes.”
