Cancer Center Profile

The Cedars-Sinai Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program, Los Angeles, CA, has performed more than 2200 stem-cell and bone marrow transplants since its inception in 1990.
Mayo Clinic is one of the largest providers of bone marrow transplants in the United States, having performed nearly 10,000 stem-cell transplants at its campuses in Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota. At Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, approximately 500 transplants are performed each year.
The Oncology Nurse-APN/PA spoke with Lisa Senerchia, RN, BSN, OCN, about her roles and responsibilities at the University of Chicago Cancer Center at Silver Cross Hospital, New Lenox, IL, and how a team-based treatment approach can improve the lives of patients with cancer.

St. Luke’s Cancer Institute, Boise, ID, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Formerly known as Mountain States Tumor Institute, St. Luke’s employs medical and radiation oncology specialists, as well as fellowship-trained cancer surgeons in areas such as thoracic, hepatobiliary, gynecologic, and urologic oncology. The facility also offers autologous and allogeneic bone marrow and stem-cell transplantation and is a National Marrow Donor Program Apheresis Center. In addition, St. Luke’s is home to Idaho’s only pediatric cancer program and federally sponsored hemophilia center.

Cancer care can be provided by many types of institutions, from large comprehensive cancer centers to small rural hospitals. In this issue of The Oncology Nurse-APN/PA (TON), we are focusing on a rural cancer center in Appalachia—the Adena Cancer Center, Chillicothe, OH, which is part of the Adena Health System. Adena has a main campus, where the cancer center is situated at Adena Regional Medical Center, as well as 2 additional critical access hospitals in Greenfield and Waverly. Together, they serve the health needs of 9 counties in south central and southern Ohio.
Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is a large, integrated healthcare system that provides care to patients throughout western Pennsylvania. As part of this network, the AHN Cancer Institute (AHNCI), offers personalized, high-quality cancer care to patients at >20 locations in and around the Pittsburgh area. The institute uses the latest, most effective anticancer therapies, and through its partnership with Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, can offer patients access to clinical trials as well as combined expertise when second opinions are necessary.
Fox Chase Cancer Center (Fox Chase) is a National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center research facility and hospital located in Philadelphia, PA. It is part of the Temple University Health System and has a staff of 2400 plus more than 250 volunteers. The world-class center employs top cancer specialists who are dedicated to diagnosing, treating, and managing all types of cancer. Fox Chase is consistently highly rated among cancer centers in the United States.
The Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center is an integral part of one of the most distinguished academic medical centers in the United States: Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. The institution offers personalized innovative treatments to adults and children with cancer through >37 programs within 29 multidisciplinary disease centers plus a vast array of support and educational services in New England and the southeastern United States. It also has one of the largest hospital-based research programs in the country. Its physician investigators conduct nearly 400 clinical trials annually, and its nurses were the first in Massachusetts to achieve Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in recognition of the excellent care they provide to patients.

The program is accredited for autologous and allogeneic transplant by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy and is a National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match Transplant Center. It has also been recognized as a Blue Cross Center of Medical Excellence, a designation awarded to select hospitals that meet evidence-based standards and provide high-quality care for patients.
Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, New Brunswick, in collaboration with RWJBarnabas Health, offers patients many advanced cancer treatment options, including immunotherapy, precision medicine, preventive services, and education. In 2018, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey earned accreditation as a Provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), which recognizes high-quality continuing nursing education, interprofessional continuing education, transition to practice programs, and skills-based competency programs.
